Jim Hassett founded LegalBizDev to help law firms increase client satisfaction and profitability by improving project management, business development, and alternative fees. Before he started working with lawyers, Jim had 20 years of experience as a sales trainer and consultant to companies from American Express to Zurich Financial Services. He is the author of 11 books, including Legal Project Management, Pricing, and Alternative Fee Arrangements, the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide, and the Legal Business Development Quick Reference Guide. He has also published more than 80 articles in the New York Times Magazine, Bloomberg Law, Managing Partner, Legal Management, Strategies: The Journal of Legal Marketing, Of Counsel, and other publications. Jim is a frequent speaker at law firms and at bar associations (including the New York City Bar, the New York State Bar, and the Massachusetts Bar), Harvard Law School, the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Defense Research Institute, the Ark Group, and at Legal Marketing Association meetings in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Savannah, and Vancouver. He has conducted webinars through the Ark Group, the Project Management Institute, West LegalEdcenter, the National Law Journal, The International Lawyers Network, TAG Academy, and the Legal Marketing Association. Jim writes the blog Legal Business Development which was featured at the ABA TECHSHOW in 2009 and again in 2010 (in its list of “60 Sites: Latest and Greatest Internet Hits”) and by TechnoLawyer (in its list of “the most influential legal blogs” in BlawgWorld). He earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University.

Steve Barrett has been active in large law firm strategy and marketing for more than 20 years, and has served as chief marketing officer at AmLaw 65 firms in Los Angeles, Seattle and Philadelphia. He has also  presented at partner retreats for more than a dozen major U.S. law firms, led business development training programs at eight law firms, authored chapters and articles for several legal publications, and made more than 25 speaking appearances at legal industry and association conferences.  Steve has also consulted to law firms in the areas of alternative fees, strategy and marketing, large account management programs, CRM system planning, major RFP responses, merger analysis and alignment and lateral partner recruiting.  He previously headed corporate communications for the Aetna Life & Casualty Companies, Hartford, Connecticut, and founded and headed LMS/Barrett Public Relations, in Providence, Rhode Island, a major New England Public relations firm.  Steve received a dual degree in political science and journalism at Syracuse University, with graduate communications study at Boston University. As a contributing author for the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide, Steve wrote two sections and was co-author on three more.

Steve Barrett

Tim Batdorf has been a practicing attorney for 20 years earning his JD from the DePaul University College of Law, and his LLM in Taxation from the University of Miami School of Law.  Tim is a frequent speaker for the American Law Institute and the Institute of Continuing Legal Education at the University of Michigan.  He has also completed extensive training through the Coaches Training Institute and is the author of the book The Lawyer’s Guide to Being Human.  Tim was formerly Chairman of the Tax Section of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association and President of the International Alliance of Holistic Lawyers, and he was associated with the Michigan law firms of Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, PLLC and Gault Davison PC.  In addition to his coaching work for LegalBizDev, Tim has an active solo practice specializing in estate planning and business planning.

Tim Batdorf

Ed Burke has worked with law firms for more than 25 years -- as Director of Marketing and Communications for Shearman & Sterling, Chief Marketing Officer of Hughes Hubbard & Reed, and with numerous other law firms as a partner in Hildebrandt, Inc. In addition to managing the Marketing and Communications Departments of Shearman and Hughes Hubbard, he has managed major projects that were cited in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Corporate Board Member magazine, the New York Law Journal, Of Counsel, California Law & Business and PR Week. He created and managed an annual two-day symposium on business development in New York and San Francisco for the New York Law Journal’s seminar division, and served as its Faculty Chair for eight years. His bylined articles have appeared in the American Lawyer, the Boston Globe, the National Law Journal and the New York Law Journal.  He is a former monthly columnist for the ABA Journal, and has completed LegalBizDev’s Certified Legal Project Manager® program.

Ed Burke

Natasha Chetty is the first certified LegalBizDev project management coach in Canada. She has worked with law firms and legal organizations of various sizes for more than 15 years, both as an in-house Marketing Director and as an external consultant who facilitates strategic initiatives, training and related programs. As the Marketing Director at Harper Grey, her responsibilities included project management of in-house marketing, business development and reputation management programs.  Prior to that, Natasha was the Marketing Director at Clark Wilson and the Programs Marketing Coordinator for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia.  Natasha is based in Vancouver, British Columbia and coaches LegalBizDev clients in the US, Canada, and around the world.

Natasha Chetty

Mike Egnatchik has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, and was formerly Associate General Counsel, International at Xerox Corporation.  Prior to that, he worked in the New York and Paris offices of Shearman & Sterling, and earned his JD at Harvard Law.  Mike has several decades of experience in worldwide legal project management and has earned a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt.  At Xerox, he managed and trained a network of in-house and outside counsel in over 100 countries, and had significant responsibility in the areas of international joint ventures, acquisitions and divestitures, compliance, arbitration and dispute resolution.  He is also a former US Air Force Officer, and a member of the State Bars of New York and California. Mike wrote two sections of the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide, and was a contributing author on six others.

Mike Egnatchik

Matt Hassett was convinced by his brother to begin research on legal pricing, alternative fees, and risk management. Matt has a Ph.D. in mathematics from Rutgers, and is the co-author of several textbooks and study guides in statistics and actuarial science, including Probability for Risk Management. Matt taught Mathematics at Arizona State University for over 30 years. As a consultant, he helped set prices for mortgage-backed securities (for American Southwest Financial) and for medicare supplement insurance (for Oxford Life Insurance).  He has also served as an expert witness on financial calculations, developed educational programs for actuaries, and worked at CVS Caremark as a director of experience analysis for health plans. As a Principal at LegalBizDev, Matt is currently developing new techniques to enable law firms to reduce risk and improve the pricing of alternative fee arrangements.

Tom Kane

Amy Hutchinson is an Instructional Designer at LegalBizDev and has developed customized workshop materials for large and mid-sized law firms. She also played a key role in editing and producing the second editions of the Legal Business Development Quick Reference Guide and the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide, as well as researching numerous articles and blog posts.  Amy has worked for the company since she graduated from Skidmore College in 1993.  Before the firm began concentrating on lawyers, she developed classroom and multimedia training programs for American Express, the FAA, Guardian Life, JP Morgan, Renaissance Worldwide, State Street Bank, Wall Street Systems and many others.  Amy currently works part-time at LegalBizDev, and full-time raising her sons Owen and James, ages 8 and 6.

Tom Kane, J.D., LL.M, has served since 1986 as an in-house marketer for a number of law firms and as a consultant to the legal industry. His most recent in-house position was as chief marketing officer for a large mid-Atlantic firm with multiple offices. Tom has been involved in all aspects of legal marketing, from training, coaching, planning, project management and public relations to conducting image campaigns, market research, advertising, and client feedback programs. For more than two decades, Tom has written and spoken on law firm marketing topics, including client relations and satisfaction, coaching, alternative fees, and project management.  Since 2005 he has authored LegalMarketingBlog.com, which was included in Blawgworld's short list of the most influential legal blogs. His book, Letters For Lawyers: Essential Communications for Clients, Prospects, and Others, Second Edition, is published by the American Bar Association. Tom obtained his B.S. degree in Economics from the College of the Holy Cross, and both of his law degrees from the University of Miami School of Law. Tom was the co-author of the section “Four approaches to business process improvement” in the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide.

Fred Kinch, MBA, has over 35 years of experience in senior management, strategic planning and business development.  He understands what law firm clients want and need from his years as a director, president and CEO of several consumer, manufacturing and high tech firms.  During his career, Fred managed numerous projects, with budgets up to $10 million, utilizing the latest program management tools and techniques to achieve their objectives, on time and within budget.  Fred has also successfully coached hundreds of sales and marketing professionals to increase efficiency and results.  He has been certified as a LegalBizDev coach, and as a Miller-Heiman instructor.  Fred has a BS in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS in Physics from Texas Christian University, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He has taught graduate courses in marketing and management at Northeastern University and Boston University, given talks and seminars to business organizations, and has been a frequent contributor to business journals and periodicals.

Fred Kinch

Gary Richards has 25 years of experience developing and conducting Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars in professional effectiveness and management for lawyers. Participants in his courses have received CLE and ethics credits from 18 state bar associations. Gary has addressed the ABA’s National Convention in Hawaii, Young Lawyers Chapters in Chicago and New Orleans, the Virginia, Cincinnati and Cleveland Bar Associations, and the Washington Defenders Association.  He has also facilitated training programs for a wide range of corporate and government clients including Pfizer, Ford, GM, PwC, and Sprint.  In addition to offering workshops in the US and Canada, Gary has conducted training in the UK, Belgium, Holland, Brazil, and Egypt.  His consulting background began with project management training at KPMG/Peat Marwick where he was a manager of employee benefits consulting. In the Legal Project Management Quick Reference Guide Gary was the co-author of three sections on delegation and lessons learned reviews. He is also the author of the Time Management Handbook for Lawyers: How-to Tactics That Really Work, published in June 2013.

Ed Schechter has focused on legal business development and marketing for more than a decade.  When he served as the Chief Marketing Officer at Duane Morris, AmLaw Media ranked the firm number one for its marketing and business development and Ed was recognized as “Marketing Director of the Year” by Hubbard One's Excellence in Legal Marketing Awards.  He established a team of senior business development managers to provide sales coaching/relationship management skills to partners to maximize client opportunities for over 700 attorneys.  As a consultant, he has coached numerous attorneys in business development and marketing.  Before working with lawyers, Ed worked at Andersen, AT Kearney/EDS, ComputerLand/IBM and on Madison Avenue.  He has guest lectured at Harvard Business School (HBS Case Study—Duane Morris: Impact of Growth on Culture).

Ed Schechter

Michelle H. Stein brings to LegalBizDev more than 15 years of experience as in-house counsel, including serving as General Counsel for Solarcom Holdings, Inc., a large private company in Atlanta, Georgia and HHH Financial, a real estate management and finance company in Florida.  In these and other in-house positions, Michelle managed staff and outside counsel to promote greater efficiency and increased cost effectiveness while producing optimal legal outcomes.  She holds a J.D. degree from South Texas College of Law, is a member of the State Bars of Florida and Georgia, and has helped manage caseloads for the Guardian Ad Litem program for the State of Florida, Seventeenth Judicial Circuit. Michelle also has substantial business management experience and expertise, and serves as LegalBizDev’s Chief Operating Officer, overseeing day-to-day operations, and creating and communicating operations strategy and policies,  She earned her MBA from Florida State University.

Michelle Stein

Elisabeth Westner is the Marketing Manager at LegalBizDev.  She is responsible for coordinating all LegalBizDev sales and marketing tasks and a variety of administrative functions.  Liz started working for LegalBizDev during summers in high school, and joined the company full time in 2008.  Since then, she has become an expert on the legal marketplace.  Liz serves as our first point of contact when clients call LegalBizDev, and does whatever it takes to assure their needs are met.  Her schedule at LegalBizDev is flexible enough to allow her to pursue her passion as a freelance musician, including serving as violist for the Nashua Symphony Orchestra, the Foundling Baroque Orchestra and other groups.  Liz has a Masters of Music in Viola Performance from the Yale School of Music and a BA in Music from Smith College.
